Tiny Footprint Coffee proudly holds the title of the world’s first carbon negative coffee. This innovative achievement is the result of a unique partnership between Roastery 7 and the Mindo Cloudforest Foundation. While Roastery 7 operates as an artisan coffee roastery, the Mindo Cloudforest Foundation acts as a nonprofit conservation organization, bringing together their expertise to create a remarkable blend of sustainability and delightful coffee.

You may be wondering how our coffee achieves a carbon negative status. The explanation is straightforward. Producing and distributing just one pound of our coffee generates approximately 4 lbs. of CO2. However, for each pound sold, a portion of the revenue is allocated to support reforestation efforts in Ecuador’s Mindo Cloud Forest. Over time, the trees planted as a result of this funding will absorb approximately 54 lbs. of CO2 from the atmosphere, effectively ensuring that we remove more carbon than we emit.

Our reforestation initiatives, focused on the Northwestern Andes of Ecuador, involve planting native tree species in areas that have been heavily deforested within the Mindo Cloud Forest. These newly planted trees not only capture extensive amounts of carbon dioxide, but they also create habitats for hundreds of bird species, promote soil conservation practices, and help restore local water tables. The Mindo Cloudforest Foundation collaborates with local landowners to generate job opportunities related to the maintenance and ecological restoration of the cloud forest, thus benefitting the community.

We prioritize beans that are shade-grown, USDA certified organic, and frequently compliant with Fair Trade or Rainforest Alliance certifications. Additionally, we procure coffee from small, family-owned farms that, while not Fair Trade certified, produce some of the most delightful and beautifully flavored coffees available.

All our roasting and training take place in our Minneapolis-based roastery, where we are fervently working to achieve a fully carbon negative operation. We utilize biodegradable coffee bags, energy-efficient lighting, and fuel-efficient ribbon burners in our roaster. Furthermore, we engage in composting coffee grounds and actively strive to minimize waste throughout our facility.

Our coffee is marked by its organic credentials, being USDA Certified Organic, Fair Trade, and shade-grown Arabica. With a flavor profile that invites all-day sipping, it offers a delightful fusion of soft caramel-like mouthfeel, elegant citrus acidity, and a sweet, clean finish.

By investing in grower education and upgrading processing infrastructure through Fair Trade premiums, Cenfrocafe has supported ongoing improvements in coffee quality and consistency over the years. Our small-batch roasting is done using a vintage 90-kilo German-built Probat drum roaster, retrofitted with modern fuel-efficient ribbon burners to ensure perfectly roasted coffee with every batch.
